Railroad Maintenance Labourer

Expectations of Railroad Maintenance Labourer

Track Maintainers work as crew members to perform various maintenance, repair and replacement tasks, including:

  1. Use various common and specialized hand tools;
  2. Prepare and maintain tools for assigned work;
  3. Remove and replace defective ties and rails;
  4. Unloading, sorting and distribution of material; and
  5. Clean-up after work completion.

Other job requirements include:

  1. Good hand eye co-ordination;
  2. Frequently lifting weights up to 50 pounds;
  3. Occasionally lifting weights up to 100 pounds;
  4. Physical and repetitious work, sometime in extreme weather conditions;
  5. Working outdoors in various weather conditions and regular exposure to dust, pollen, noise and vibrations;
  6. Valid driver's license; and
  7. Working shifts, sometimes away from home.
  8. Visual acuity and hearing threshold tests are required for this position. This position is subject to night, weekend and holiday work hours when needed.


Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  1. Ability to perform heavy manual labour, frequently lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds with the assistance of applicable equipment or other employees.
  2. Ability to meet colour and peripheral vision requirements.
  3. Must be able to work from heights with the assistance of proper safety equipment.
  4. Ability to work in all outdoor weather conditions.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work involves meeting multiple demands on a timely basis. Duties will require working weekends and Holidays.

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills essential to Job Functions:

  1. Written and verbal communication skills.
  2. Problem analysis and resolution skills.
  3. Ability to perform maintenance repair, troubleshooting, rebuilds and overhaul of rail track equipment and materials.
  4. Ability to analyze malfunctions in mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic equipment and determines repair and performs track fabrication and assembly tasks.
  5. Knowledge of basic math skills
  6. Ability to maintain accurate records and correctly use track test equipment (ultrasonic and measurement equipment).
  7. Ability to complete track maintenance and inspection programs.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships.
  9. Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  10. Must meet established Hampton Roads Transit goals and work standards.
  11. Knowledge of and experience with track maintenance safety practices as they pertain to rail transportation systems.
  12. Knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic systems, testing and inspections methods/tools for track maintenance and inspections.


Essential Job Functions:

  1. Perform maintenance projects within schedule and budget utilizing work windows allowed by operating considerations. Report delays and problems promptly, taking appropriate action to maintain effective co-ordination of activities.
  2. Comply with all applicable policies and rules. Recommend safety procedures and standard practices to ensure maintenance activities precede safely and efficiently.
  3. Adheres to the highest quality standards of job performance and worker responsibilities.
  4. Communicates effectively with the Track Supervisor and co-workers.
  5. Ensure that daily, accurate records are maintained, and a detailed account of the specific work functions accomplished on schedule.
